# Pushover alternative for iPhone and Apple Watch

> How Honk compares with Pushover, ntfy and Pushbullet for alerts on iPhone and Apple Watch: price, self-hosting, Android, and what Honk does differently.

Pushover, ntfy and Pushbullet can all put a notification on your phone when a script, a server or a service asks them to. So can Honk. They were built for different jobs, though, and that matters more than any feature list. This page compares them using each project’s own pages, as of October 2026.

## In short

- **Pushover** has apps for iPhone, Apple Watch, Android and the desktop. You pay once per platform, and its emergency priority repeats an alert until someone acknowledges it.
- **ntfy** is open source. You can use the free public server at ntfy.sh or run your own, with apps for Android and iPhone.
- **Pushbullet** is mainly for sending links, files and texts between your own devices. Its apps page lists Android, Chrome, Firefox and Windows, and no iPhone app.
- **Honk** is an inbox for what your sites, shops, servers and automations report, made for iPhone and Apple Watch. It folds repeats into one push and follows each problem until it recovers.

## At a glance

| Service | iPhone | Android | Self-hosted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honk | App | Web app | No |
| Pushover | App | App | No |
| ntfy | App | App | Yes |
| Pushbullet | No | App | No |

## Price

- **Pushover:** a 30-day free trial, then a one-time purchase of $4.99 for each platform you use (iPhone and iPad, Android, desktop). Each user can send up to 10,000 messages a month for free. Pushover for Teams costs $5 per user a month, or $60 a year, with the apps included.
- **ntfy:** free and open source (Apache 2.0 and GPLv2). The public server at ntfy.sh is free to use, and paid plans add higher limits for people who don’t want to run their own.
- **Pushbullet:** a free version with limits, and Pushbullet Pro at $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year.
- **Honk:** a plan per workspace, not per person or device: Free, Pro at €9 a month and Team at €29 a month. The [plans page](https://honk-honk.app/pricing) has the limits.

## ntfy on iPhone

iOS strictly limits what apps can do in the background, so instant delivery to an iPhone needs a central server connected to Apple’s push service. ntfy’s documentation explains how a self-hosted server handles it: for each message, it sends a poll request with only the message ID and a hash of the topic to ntfy.sh, which relays it through Apple’s push service, and the app then fetches the message from your server. Without that relay, delivery to an iPhone can take hours.

## What Honk does differently

- **One push per problem.** Events that share a `group_key` fold into one group. The first one pushes, repeats wait for an update at most every 5 minutes with the running count, and a louder level pushes right away.
- **Problems that recover.** Send a `recovery` for the same key, and Honk closes the problem and tells you it’s over.
- **Attention.** One list of what still needs you, on iPhone and Apple Watch. **Mark handled** once you’ve dealt with it.
- **Live Activities.** A serious incident stays on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island until it shows Recovered.
- **Widgets** for the Home Screen and the Lock Screen, and Control Center controls.
- **An Apple Watch app** with what needs you, **Mark handled** with Double Tap, complications and the Smart Stack.
- **Connections.** Paste one URL into GitHub, Stripe, Shopify, Sentry, Grafana or Uptime Kuma, and their events arrive as messages, with fixes closing the problems.
- **Heartbeats.** Honk tells you when a cron job or a backup stops checking in ([cron job monitoring](https://honk-honk.app/guides/cron-job-monitoring)).
- **On-device AI.** Apple Intelligence sorts messages into categories on your iPhone. Nothing is sent to a server for AI, and it never hides or delays a notification.
- **Teams.** Shared workspaces with roles, while quiet hours, digests and mutes stay per person.

## What the others do that Honk doesn’t

- **Pushover** can repeat an emergency alert, as often as every 30 seconds, until someone acknowledges it. Honk has no alerts that repeat until answered: it isn’t an on-call pager.
- **Pushover and ntfy** have native Android apps.
- **ntfy** runs entirely on your own server if you want it to.
- **Pushbullet** mirrors your Android phone’s notifications on your computer and moves files and texts between devices.
- **Pushover** costs a one-time fee per platform instead of a subscription.

## Honk’s limits

- **No self-hosting.** Honk is a hosted service at honk-honk.app, on a server in Germany.
- **No native Android app.** On Android, the web app installs from Chrome and gets notifications through Web Push.
- **Invite-only for now.** You [request access](https://honk-honk.app/request-access), and the invitation arrives by email if your request is approved.

## Which one fits

- Alerts that repeat until someone answers, or a one-time price: **Pushover**.
- Everything on your own server: **ntfy**.
- Files, links and texts between your Android phone and your computer: **Pushbullet**.
- Many tools, the same alert over and over, and one calm inbox that also tells you when things are fixed: **Honk**. The [how it works](https://honk-honk.app/how-it-works) page has all the rules.
